X-traordinarily Strange

I'm linking up to Jenny Matlock's Alphabe-Thursday. The letter this week is "X." There aren't that many words that begin with X, so I'm cheating. X is for X-traordinary. I'm probably reusing the word from a former round of Alphabe-Thursday. Sigh.

When I first started blogging, I put so much effort into it! I'd write every weekday and spend hours visiting other blogs to leave comments. Then, I'd hang out in Twitter, networking and building up my followers. Over time, I acquired a nice number of followers. But this meant I was following just as many blogs, and it was getting really difficult to read all of them.

I was working my butt off during this time to build up a blog following. While the number of visits to my blog certainly was increasing over time it stayed relatively low. I had no idea what else I could do to get more people reading.

Then something happened: I got a real job that paid real money. Over time, my work wanted me to increase my hours from part-time to full-time. My blog really suffered. Between working full-time, commuting about 2 hours a day, and still acting like a stay-at-home mom, I had no time to spend on my blog. I still enjoyed writing, so I just tried to make my writing more manageable by blogging once a week.

But visit blogs and hang out in Twitter? I just don't have time to do that anymore. I just post mostly for myself because I find blogging fun. As expected, my stats showed a sharp decrease in visitors. That decline lasted for a few months.

Then something X-traordinary happened. I started getting visitors to my blog. Granted, the numbers are still on the small side, but I'm getting more visitors than when I worked so hard at blogging. All the traffic is from Google searches. I'm sure most people pop on, then pop off. But still, it's cool to see about 1,000 visitors a week when I used to get 1,000 in a month.

Now, whenever I get tempted to throw the towel in, I look at my stats and hang in there. Just for another month.

Ha!

  1. I did the same thing, go to a lot of blogs and leaves and do some social networking but I got tired of that. I think if people wants to visit your blog, they will. of cause, it's nice to leave comments and network now and then but it's a job and you shouldn't have to do it if you don't want to.

    have a great day.

  2. I confess, I'm a statistic junkie when it comes to the blog. Ultimately, I do the blog for myself, but I LOVE the comments and hearing from people that tell me they always look forward to reading my posts. :-)

  4. I rarely look at those stats. I enjoy blogging and when it comes down to it, it's most often just for me. I do enjoy the camaraderie and community, though!

  5. I do know what you mean. You have to work hard to get friends follow you and stay following. Sometimes I just don't have the time but I try.

  6. I think that as you continue to post ( whether every day or once a week or whatever ) that the traffic probably builds up through the searches because you have more and more content ? Not sure...I just started blogging around the end of May so I am no expert at any of it : )

  7. I generally post once a week, to Alphabe-Thursday,and I zoom around the other members sites to leave comments. I will put something else in if I find it interesting or helpful, but for the most part - once a week. I have to agree with Eden Hill. I blog for me, but do enjoy the comments, when they come.

  8. My blogging will probably be slowing down as well once winter hits, since it will be harder to find places and events to take photos. But, like the others, I do it for fun, to engage in my hobby, and to have a creative outlet. Congratulations on continuing to build followers. Your spike in views may also mean you are using great tags.

  11. Good for you! I, on the other hand, am bagging it, as you'll see from my post this week. Plenty of followers...just no time to keep up and that takes all the fun out of the pursuit!

  12. Whew! Hope you squeeze in some "rest time" into your busy schedule! I know what you mean about time! I think I have always done (or at least tried to do) one post a week! And there have been many times that even one post a week was a challenge! :o)

I am so thankful for the opportunity to share the art that I do and a little about my family (I would have loved if blogs were around when my mom was little, and been able to read posts from my mom during her growing up, her stories and perspective as a wife and mother and even when our kids were little...just to be able to look back on and read) & I love, love, love all the blog friends I have made over the years and I always try to at least do a return thank you visit to those that have stopped by my place.

I wish there were more times in a day to do more blog visits. But for now, it is a matter of doing what is possible :o) Our year this year has been full of many amazing events and get-togethers and changes, so my posts and blog reading has been fewer than in years past...

    Blessings & Aloha!
I am at our daughter, son in law, and grandbaby's home visiting, but wanted to stop by and say thank you for your lovely visit! & I hope you are able to stop by again Nov 9th when I share the fun coin purse blog hop that I joined...
